Installing an Aftermarket Internal Bluetooth Module on Acer 3680

All Acer 3680 have a bluetooth button on the front, but only some models of Acer 3680 actually have the internal bluetooth module. This has led people to spend hours trying to get bluetooth to work, only to discover that they don’t have bluetooth. This does mean that all or most model of Acer 3680 probably have a connector for the internal bluetooth module and an internal antenna. All we need to do is to find a compatible module to connect to the connector.
Acer does not sell the bluetooth module as a part. Since the connector is essentially a USB connector, I could have rewire a USB dongle if I can figure out the pin outs. However, I am not a hardware person and don’t really have the time to mess with solder and wires. I managed to acquired an aftermarket bluetooth module from a ebay vendor OldEgg Wireless. OldEgg mentioned that the part was not an original Acer part, but it was only about $34 with shipping. If it worked, the it was a much better option than USB dongle or PCMCIA cards. There are a few other vendors offering the part, but OldEgg at least was offering reasonable prices (one vendor wanted $150, why would I spend that much money for an accessory for a $400 laptop?)
The module arrived in a few days. The module is a tiny box size of a fingertip with a cable terminating in a 6-pin connector. There’s some double sided tape in the back of the box. I have no idea who the vendor is since the label on the box is in Chinese.
Installation is actually pretty easy for the Acer 3680. All you need to do is to remove the memory door panel, exposing a white 6 pin socket. All you need to do is plug the connector into the socket (it only goes in one way). You can remove the backing of the double-sided tape and stick it on some part of the motherboard. In my case, I just tucked into a crevice of the case.
To test it, I boot the laptop up and press the bluetooth button and the blue light lit up, indicating that it was working. After installing gnome-bluetooth under Ubuntu, I was able to scan and connect to my Motorola Razr from across the room. I assume that it probably works under XP and Vista, but I don’t have either OS on the machine to try it.
I assume that this trick will work on all models of Acer 3680, but you should open up your memory panel to make sure there is a 6-pin connector. I did notice that there seemed to be several models of Acer 3680, so there’s a small chance that this may not work with every model.

It seems an adapted bluetooth dongle, it would be interesting removing for a moment the black protection to take a photo, and to mark where any of the 5 wires connect on both the sides. It could help the do it yourself maniacs to connect internally a cheap bluetooth dongle.

I had success in connecting internally a modified usb bluetooth dongle to CN19, it works perfectly and it turns on and off with the frontal button with blue light.
The pinout of CN19 is, counting 1 the side in direction of the screws and 6 the side of memory modules:
1 = + 5v
2 = GND
3 = + data
4 = – data
5 = blue light
pin 6 is not used, pin 1 and 5 can be connected together if you want the blue light working.

An USB Bluetooth dongle usually has four points to be connected to the USB port. Is this possible to connect the dongle with the help of its four points to the six points Bluetooth connector in the mother board?

Second query is, I have worked hard spending hours after hours to find the mother board six pins’ specifications but found no such result. Is this possible to see the specifications of those six pins’ diagram to identify individual pins?

After spending all day trying to get the Aspire 3680 BlueTooth to work, I found this page from Google. I opened the memory hatch and sure enough, NO BlueTooth! Thanks for the link to OldEgg, my 3680 will have BlueTooth very soon.

OK, the saga continues! This entry may seem long, but if it helps anyone. . . . . .
After waiting for days to get the Bluetooth Dongle and installing it, it would not work! I had installed the Acer Bluetooth Drivers while trying to get Bluetooth to work before I found out the 3680 is sans Bluetooth as mentioned above. When I installed the Blutooth Dongle the switch on the front would report “Bluetooth Enabled”. But when I tried to connect to my DeLorme BT-20 nothing seemed right. The Control Panel – Bluetooth Devices would not open a window or start the Wizard, but the Vista Hardware Device Manager states the “This Device is working properly”
I then went to the link Oldegg posted for the drivers and downloaded the Blue Soleil (2 hour download on high speed internet?), and installed Blue Soleil. Blue Soleil would find the DeLorme BT-20 and I could Pair it, But still would not connect or allow me to set up Serial Ports for the device. Plus, Blue Soleil only allows 5MB of date transfer in evaluation mode. For full access you must buy it for 16 Euros. (Bait and switch)
I uninstalled everything and tried reloading the Vista Drivers. This time the Control Panel – Bluetooth Devices would open a window, but when I clicked the ADD Button the Wizard would not find any devices. I then noticed the Security Tab Page had the Allow Devices to discover this computer box unchecked. I checked the box and when I clicked the Apply Button I received an error message saying Windows couldn’t change the settings.
I uninstalled everything again and installed the Acer Bluetooth Drivers with the Bluetooth switched off. This time I installed the drives by Right Clicking the Setup and selecting Run as Administrator. When the Driver install popped a message stating it could not find hardware I turned on the Bluetooth and when the “Bluetooth Enabled” appeared on the screen I clicked the OK in the message window. The Driver Install continued and completed installing all the components. (Radio, Comm Ports, etc.)
With the Driver Install completed I was able to go to the Control Panel – BlueThooth Devices and it would show the DeLorme BT-20 as a device, I was able to configure a connection.
I believe the problem I had was the Windows Vista P.O.S. Operating System the protects the user from themselves by preventing an install of any software (drivers included) by disabling the Administrator (or equivalent) user privileges.

I just bought the part and report later.
My question is about warranty.
I can see how adding this compnent voids the warranty guidelines, but I was told that adding user based RAM to a laptop, by a uesr, would void the the warranty. This was at WorstBuy. Not like I am trying to HJ the thread..Any comments?

As for the warranty, I really don’t know. Most manufacturers won’t void your warranty if all you do is replace the memory. Besides, if your computer develops a problem and you worry that BB will point the finger at your device, you can just remove it before giving it to them for repair (which would be a good idea any way, since they may misplace it).

My friends you all r gr8!!!..Ive question to andrea… please help us with some pics..like u mentioned usb dongle diagrams, But..how do we connect it on the mother board without the 6pin which was shown in the figure above??
I have hard time understanding..if we buy the thin bluetooth dongle..all i got to do is..just solder at the points shown on the BT and..how about soldering on the mother board.

I just got mine. It has the little 6 pin white connector on the wire, all I have to do is plug it into the slot on the MB and I was just checking back here before doing it, to see which driver etc. This is a plug and play process hopefully. Will let you know when I am all back up and running. I have already had a BT dongle running with a mouse. I am NOT uninstalling that driver. I also had installed all the Acer BT dongle driver when I was attempting to get the non-existant internal BT working. But, then I found this page.

I am back up and running, XP found all drivers and I just re-paired the mouse with the BT discovery icon and viola’.

I have an acer extensa 5620. Same Bluetooth Problem. Had same problem as Ron Apel. My laptop has Two Plugs on MB. One near rear USB, other near front switch. Dont know which to use???

My opinion and my suggestions…
The only reason I wanted to do this is to have the trill of doing something on your own.
But it is no fun:( unless ur a professional..who can solder and who has all the stuff what it needs.
1)ordered bluetooth similar one on the picture from ww.dealexterme.com it took 15days to get to me.=$6
2)ordered laptop lcd wire from ebay..=$5+$5 shipping=$10
3)tried to solder with dollar store ..soldering rod and wire..didn’t work.$2..Had to get a new one from radioshack $9=$11
total=$27…most of all ..i had couple sloder burns on my fingures,,:(…Nevertheless I had fun ..fixing it on my own;)That what matters,,after all.

Acer Aspire 5720z is not the same model of Acer 3680, so I am not certain of the location. There is a thread on this on another news group with a picture.

I tried installing an internal bluetooth module in my Aspire 5720. The socket for it is underneath the handrest at the front of the unit, next to a larger connector that links to the USB and IR port. However, unfortunately it does not appear to work. No bluetooth device when pressing the bluetooth button and no hardware showing in device manager. Looks like Acer disabled the port on my machine to prevent this being fitted.

I just got as second hand one TravelMate 2414WLMi .
And started looking about the missing BT adapter too.
From my experience ( electronics engineer) i would say beware about the very cheap BT external dongles .
They work , but they have very small range , not comparable even with the mobile phones BT with range as 10 meters.
The laptop are sealed by metal , so anything inside it , it would had hard times to transmit out side .
My conclusion is that its better to use the proper BT device for laptop usage , as it has a better antenna on the PCB , and effective distance range will be larger.
The price deference between the BT dongle , and laptop board is not that great , if we compare branded items.
I also got one BT dongle at 3$ plus 2$ shipping.
It was a nightmare to make it work , with the BlueSoleil software.
I had to find a hacked latest version, so to make it work with out getting blue screens of death on my XP Pro SP3 Desktop.
So i would save my self from the trouble this time, by getting something better this time for the laptop.
And not a cheap external USB BT dongle for internal usage…
For external USB BT dongles , use what ever you like , its external, it will transmit 1-3 meters at max.

I have a button too dedicated to activate bluetooth, but of course “no device” in the machine.

If you open up your computer, you can check if you can find an internal bluetooth connector. Most of them are essentially usb connector so if you are tech incline, you can probably wire something to a USB dongle or find am internal bluetooth with similar connector.

Anyway, I already opened the 6930G up and took a photo (bad) aswell. I hoped to find a connector along the lines you mention. Perhaps even named CN19 (naive I know) as mentioned in this thread : http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=185567
But there was no such connector. Only available connector is one of two identical where the first is already used for a card named Intel WLAN. Theese connectors are about 30 mm wide with atleast 30 super small pins in one row. Exactly a connector one would expect for something like a LAN card, but way overkill for a bluetooth device I would think.
Any thoughts ?
Anyone with a similar computer ?

Ok… Here is what I found out so far. The WLAN card in the 6930 is most likley an Intel wifi Link 5100/5300 as stated in the Acer Quick guide. This card connector has the form factor of a “half mini card”
Also stated in the Acer quick guide is the Bluetooth (if hardware installed!) being 2.0+Enhanced Data Rate.
So, if I am right about the remaining connector being the same type as that of the WLAN, all I need to do is to find a Bluetooth 2.0 EDR card with a “half mini card” type connector.
And of course if any of you guys in here could back me up on this it would be just great.

The sort of information you are looking for is really in the service manuals if the info even exists or if replacement parts exists, you can google the part and figure out what sort of connector it is. In this case, there is a service manual, but no service parts. You can buy the service manual (it is not free) and hope that the info is in there, but I wouldn’t push it.
I would not get the Mini PCI card. It may work but it may not. If a blue tooth card is like a typical wireless card, the card needs to have a antenna (which is usually buried in the area of your LCD). In the best case, it works fine. In the worse case, it doesn’t work at all.
I would suggest sticking something like this:

Several manufacturers make something similar. It’s cheap and doesn’t require opening up your machine. It will probably stick out, but only slightly. If you check out the different model, you may find one that has the lowest profile.

I’d like to update my results here, as NoteBookReview forum member LetMeAlone gave me some helpful advice. Both connectors are simply USB connectors, but the VCC is too low for most of the USB devices I connect to it. Tapping into a USB port satisfies the power needs, though.
I wonder if anyone else has noticed a reduced range from the BlueTooth device because of it only getting 3.3v instead of 5v.

Does your Acer have anything written on the motherboard near to where you plugged the Bluetooth in?
I brought an Aspire 5738 Z, and found no Bluetooth. I emailed Acer Tech Support and was told that it’s not fitted. I looked under the 2 covers and note that there is no connector, but there is a module strip connector with Sim1 near it. What’s that for then?
I emailed Acerspareparts.co.uk (actually a computer parts company in Ireland) and told ВЈ47. I ask for a part number and told its ВЈ52.
I look on ebay and find they go for between ВЈ7 and ВЈ15.
I find this article, and try to remove whole bottom cover from laptop – but fail.
With the wireless & hard drive cover removed, I notice that under the base r near to the Wireless module, and just out of reach, is a white connector with BT1 and C665 written near to it.
Would I be right in thinking that BT1 is Bluetooth connector?

I’ve been trying to fit a Bluetoooth Module in my Aspire 5720, It’s got the Bluetooth buton and it is the correct model of motherboard so there SHOULD be a socket there when I get to it.
I got the buetooth module from e-bay ( ВЈ12.95 inc P&P from http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=320394929398)
AND I know WHERE to fit it – on the mother board near the “front”
AND I’ve got the driver.
BUT I CAN’T GET THE BOTTOM COVER OFF!
I take the 2 cover plates off OK and remove the battery AND I can remove the keyboard fine BUT after I’ve removed all of the screws from the main bottom cover it does not seem to want to come off. I realsie there will be some “retaining clips” but it still seems fixed, especially near the microphone/headset sockets.
HELP please! I can’t find any threads ( anywhere) on removing this cover!

This article encouraged me to fit a Bluetooth module in to my own Acer Aspire 5738 Z.
The 4 pin Bluetooth socket is already mounted on the motherboard next to the wireless module. As the socket is already connected to the pc with wires, all I had to do was use a short 4 pin lead and push the module in to an adjacent space.
Got my module very cheaply from hellowifi on eBay
Works wonderfully.

Remove the HD/WiFi cover and look toward the front of the machine behind the WiFi module, there is your connector. Simply slide the WiFi module out and you have (all be it very restricted) access to the BT1 4 pin socket. Gonna order my module now.

I found it. It was a piece of cake with a curved pair of foceps. I placed the module under the wifi card. Not happy with that location but it works.

I bought Acer aspire 4220 befor two years and was told it has a bluetooth. but didn’t have one!! I was very mad, but couldn’t do nothing about it. Well Today I bought Acer aspire 5738!! I strictly told him (the salesman in the showroom) that if this has no blutooth I am going to return it. And please guess what happened? YOU ARE RIGHT!!! No Bluetooth AGAIN!!!! You have no Bluetooth module. Acer resellers list bluetooth as a feature, yet most do not come with the unit. Mine also stated Bluetooth but did not have it.

installed windows 7 on my moms acer 5735, with original windows bluetooth worked, now it is impossible to make it work, also acer has no drivers for this model with windows 7, am really dissappointed with acer and would not recommand it to anyone, support is really bad. i have 2 other laptops myself had no problems also have a desktop pc, take a guess also no problems, acer is fine unless you make changes. also buttons fall off, acer doest offer much quality and next time im going with my mom when she gets a new one and it will be anything but acer(or fujitsu siemens they have internal errors like fans not working or collecting dust).

i got acer aspire of 5732 but fond out that there is bluetooth button but it doesnt connects i downloaded essential software but even though it doesn’t work get me rid of it

how about a BIg SHAME on You ACER for selling hardware that seems as if it has bluetooth but instead every1 who buys it gets the Mystery’?’Box which may or may not actualy have bluetooth and ppl are scratching their heads wondering why that cant get it working. and there is no buletin or any warning comin from acer about this problem. haing a switch thats supposed to do something but it doesnt- that belongs in a joke shop like the fake doorbell n such.
